After registration the course begins with a discussion on emulsifiers and how these may be used in different products. Various recipes are provided and the focus of the session is to reveal how you can create your own recipes to cater for individual skin conditions. This approach requires a thorough understanding of the role of emulsifiers and how these combine water and oil together to form the basis of your cream. Kolbjørn will explain how emulsifiers used in mass-produced commercial skin care products can have a detrimental effect upon the skin. At the end of this first session there will be an opportunity to address any problems that students have experienced in making moisturisers and to learn some techniques for remedying these (e.g. runny creams, unpleasant smelling creams, etc).
Following a tea-break Kolbjørn then discusses 34 different types of moisturiser - not all of which he recommends but which are nevertheless used within the cosmetic industry. The emphasis of this session is on understanding the various moisturisers used for different purposes.
A detailed discussion about preservatives highlights the importance of knowing how to preserve skin-care products naturally without the need to use harmful chemicals used in commercial products.
After lunch the focus is on detergents - how they work and what the different effects are when used in shampoos, shower gels and liquid soaps. Again, the emphasis is on applying this knowledge so that you can make your own tailor-made products.
In the final theory session Kolbjørn covers new raw materials used in modern hair-care products, as well as discussing clays, waxes and herbs.
The day concludes with a Question & Answer session - an opportunity for participants to access Kolbjørn's vast knowledge and wisdom accumulated over the last 17 years of working in the natural skin-care business.
