Vitamins used in Skin Care

vitamins

There are many benefits in creating your own Natural Skin Care products. The products can be tailor-made with different ingredients such as Vitamins to to suit the needs of the individual. This applies to Creams, Cleansers, Toners and Shampoos, which can be easily modified to suit the individual's specific skin condition.

Potentially dangerous chemicals are not included as our Recipes are composed of only natural raw materials. Any ingredients to which the client may be allergic can be safely replaced with an alternative. The client's product is more like a personal prescription. Receiving a unique and personalised treatment helps customers to become loyal, as these products cannot be found elsewhere.

These beauty salon 'secrets' are explained below, enabling you to make them yourself, either for use at home, or for your own professional salon or clinic.

Personalised products have added value and customers will pay more. Cutting out the manufacturer can reduce the costs dramatically too. Making 2-3 litres of Cream will take only 1-2 hours.

Branding is now an important aspect of today's successful businesses. Products can be labelled to reflect the corporate identity of the business. It is also much easier to sell a product that you have made yourself.

"I just wanted to write in gratitude and appreciation for your excellent advice on scar treatment with oils. I have found the results to be excellent and even though I was considering plastic surgery, I now feel that it will be unnecessary - so a large thank you!"

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E Oil is recommended as a safe antioxidant. The smallest amount of Vitamin E Oil to use is 0.5%, which will prolong the shelf life to around 2 years. This quantity is sufficient to protect the Cream's ingredients but you will need to add much more to protect the shelf life of the skin! Most commercial products do not contain enough megadoses of vitamins to do this. You can use up to 50%-60% in an Oil Blend and although very safe to use on the skin, it should never be taken internally at these levels.

For anti-wrinkle and skin protection you need to increase the amount of Vitamin E Oil from 2-3% up to 10-30%. This can easily be blended into your Base Oil. Applying 10-30% Vitamin E Oil keeps the skin in good condition and increases the growth of new skin cells. It also increases the circulation, so don't worry if your skin gets slightly reddish. Vitamin E Oil is a very oily substance so if you have oily skin you need to combine it with a high dosage of 'thin' dry Vegetable Oil. When you make a Cream or Face Oil you need only add the antioxidant (Vitamin E Oil) once to keep the product fresh. To work as an antioxidant for your skin you need to apply it every day.

In the West, aromatherapists tend to use wheatgerm as an antioxidant. However, wheatgerm from factories goes rancid within a few weeks. This is because it contains very little Vitamin E Oil (0.4-0.5%). It has a large amount of Linolenic Acid that makes this rancidity process even faster. This is why the smell of wheatgerm is normally so bad. A rancid product accelerates the rancidity process of the skin and through that we get wrinkles. Wheatgerm and Vitamin E Oil should not be confused as a Preservative as it does not preserve the products from bacteria and fungi. For that you need to use appropriate Preservatives.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a vitamin that is used for all types of skin infections. It is safe to use in the form of Retinal Palmitate. This vitamin plays an important role in the functioning of the eyes and the making of new skin and mucous membranes. It prevents infections in the mucous membranes (respiratory). Furthermore, Vitamin A nourishes the skin, counteracts inflammations and protects cell membranes and other structures within the cells from the damage caused by free radicals. All of these actions help to prevent skin disorders.

Vitamin A occurs naturally in liver, fish oils and egg yolk (primarily as retinol). The daily recommended intake for adults is 2.500-5000 IE. Excess Vitamin A is stored in the liver. With larger doses (50.000-100.000 IE per day) the liver is unable to store the excess and this is then spread around the body and can cause symptoms such as headache, hair loss, feeling unwell and fatigue.

Vitamin A is produced synthetically. Natural compounds can be used e.g. those found in Beta carotene or Essential Oils. These result in a Vitamin A acid (retinoic acid), which is very strong and active. This is stabilised by mixing with organic acids such as acetic acid to produce retinol acetate, or palmitic acid, to produce retinyl palmitate. Retinyl palmitate is a yellowish, thick, liquid Oil which becomes very thick at temperatures below 15ºC. Dosage should be in the ratio of 0.1-2% (maximum), i.e. 0.1-2ml pr. 100ml finished product. Retinyl palmitate is absorbed by the skin. It is used in Skin Care products for dry, ageing, lifeless skin, also in the treatment of acne, eczema and psoriasis. Vitamin A increases blood flow, stimulates the skin and protects against sunburn. Vitamin A is also used in Anti-wrinkle Creams where it is claimed to 'remove' wrinkles.
